Brian Braddock is the twin brother of Betsy Braddock. They have another sibling, Jamie. Brian and Betsy discovered very different mutant abilities around the same time. Unfortunately for Brian, his abilities were hard for him to control. A fight at school caused Brian's powers to be exposed. The Braddock twins had to leave school and hide away in their home. The only way Brian was able to finish his education was through an invitation to the Xavier School for Gifted Youth. Brian works hard to learn control of his powers, but it hasn't been easy.

Brian Braddock has the power of super strength, stamina, and senses (though not on level with Wolverine). He can also fly at high speeds. Unfortunately for Brian, control of these powers does not come easily. He derives his power from the friction between dimensions and this energy is hard to control. He didn't explode or shock anyone, but he had been known to accidentally fly through a brick wall, break objects by holding them too tight, and to have an overactive sense of smell that made him ill.

It was when his father died and left him Excalibur that he found control. He also found paranoia, jealousy, and anger. The sword ruined his relationship with Sue Storm and by the time he quit it, he was drinking heavily to cope with loss.

Then Brian began dating Felicia and she found that the stone in the hilt of the sword was removable. What Brian slowly discovered was that the sword made him more powerful, but brought along the extremes of fear that came with power. The stone was a piece of Britian and he was able to derive peace and control from his homeland. None of these artifacts were necessary at home.

Felicia cheated on Brian with Remy, sending him into another dark spiral. Brian picked himself up, apologizing to Susan for the way their relationship ended and admitting his drinking problem. Just as Brian was getting his act back together the school was attacked and Betsy was killed. Brian took an offer from Tony Stark to be an Avenger, to find a way to make it right.
